Self-Management Becoming More Important
December 8th, 2007 by Tom Cobb
We hear everyday about how the health care system in the United States is broken. It is on the news daily, presidential candidates are actively discussing the issue, Michael Moore’s latest movie ‘Sicko’ deals with it and almost everyone has a large or small horror story to tell about it.
Considering the cost and inefficiency of the health care system we feel self-management is becoming more and more important. Self-management is usually less expensive than getting sick and seeking treatment. When you manage yourself you are in control and managing your health yourself is the best prevention of illness.
The fundamentals of self-management have not changed; exercise, diet, a balanced lifestyle with meaningful work and recreation and good relaxation skills. Maybe it is time to take self-management more seriously since the health safety net is shredded.
